Grimsby Town A’ came a step closer to retaining their EFL Trust National U19 Futsal Cup title for the fourth year running at Birmingham on Wednesday (6th March). Successful results in the quarter final and semi-final saw the Mariners Futsal U19s A’ side book at place in the final against old enemy Cardiff City at the end of April in what will be a repeat of last season’s Championship Playoff final.
The EFL Trust National U19 Futsal Cup is held in the same regard as the FA Youth Cup in its neighbouring sport football. The qualification rounds started in December and the 30 teams were narrowed down to just 8 at the end of January.
Remarkably Grimsby Town B’ (Town’s second team) also made it into last 8 and quarter finals, Grimsby having the option to enter a second team in the competition as they won it last year. The draw carried out in February led to some familiar clashes in the Quarter finals, with Bristol City up against Newport County, Cardiff City taking on Chelsea whilst Grimsby Town A’ were paired up with Midlands high flyers Cambridge United and Grimsby’s B’ team playing local rivals Scunthorpe United.
In the morning Grimsby Town B’ beat the Iron 5-2 in the quarter finals, Dylan Maine-Miller making some superb saves with the score line at 2-1 which proved pivotal in the tie. Grimsby Town A’ overcame Cambridge United 6-3 after racing into a 4 goals lead, Tyler Harding grabbing a brace, his first after just 20 seconds on the clock!
This set up an all Grimsby semi-final. Once again the A’ side raced into a comfortable lead with some superb team goals. The B’side were always chasing the game and adopted the fly keeper tactic as early as the first half in a desperate attempt to get back in the game. Unfortunately, this played into the A’ teams hands and they hit on the counter attack emphatically eventually extending the score line to 12-2.
It was all smiles at the end as the B’ team wished the A’ side the best in the final and they can take pride in knowing they have contributed to the A’ team’s progress over the last 18 months.
The final of the EFL Trust National U19 Futsal Cup will take place at Birmingham Arena on the 30th April and will be between Grimsby Town and Cardiff City.
